Once Upon A Wave by Roberto Diaz
Once Upon A Wave
For thousands of years ancient civilizations used story-telling as a means to communicate their history and wisdom to younger generations. Elders were revered for their knowledge and insight.
Polynesians, the ancestors of the Hawaiians, are credited for being the first surfers and first surf instructors. They passed down their wave and ocean wisdom while telling stories by the campfire’s light. Like them, the story will bring ocean awareness and safety tips so that our younger generations can learn from our experiences, much like the Pacific Islanders did in the days of old.
Once Upon A Wave – A Surf Story provides your kids with the necessary knowledge to avoid dangerous situations. They will also be taught how to reach safety in case they happen upon a dangerous situation or place. Ocean lovers young and old will be reminded of the joys of the sea while learning all about her rules.
What a perfect way to educate children about the inherent dangers of the ocean, with a fun-filled, action-packed story! It’s a true hands on learning experience! Richard Chew – Senior Lifeguard Supervisor – City of San Clemente, 42 years of service
If you have any kids, grandkids, nephews or nieces that enjoy ocean sports, this is a perfect gift. Robert August – The Endless Summer – Surf Legend
When my boys were groms, there weren’t any books to buy them about surfing to encourage reading. Once Upon a Wave fills that void! Peter “PT” Townend – ASP World Champion 1976

Book Excerpt
Moe loved to surf.
He began riding waves on his belly while he was still learning to talk.
He lived with his family close to the beach, which made it easy for him to surf often.
By the time Moe was 12, he was one of the best surfers around.
But one day, Moe found himself in trouble. He was paddling hard, but could not move from the same spot. As he tried to get to the beach, the ocean seemed to pull him into its depths. No one else was out in the water near him and the sky was covered with dark clouds.
The ocean felt strange, Moe thought to himself. It did not want to let him go.
Moe whined to himself. “Dude. I totally feel like a hamster in a hamster wheel. I am paddling like a maniac!”
